Perspective in quilling

an original dimensional method created by andrea tisovec

Comparison between perspective quilling and traditional quilling.

On the left, the application of Perspective in Quilling, using variations in height and size to create visual depth and a three-dimensional effect.

On the right, the flat composition of the traditional method, where all elements remain on the same level.

Section 1 - Introduction

Perspective in Quilling is an original artistic technique created by Andrea Tisovec, introducing depth, spatial construction, and tridimensional perception into traditional paper filigree.

Developed through years of independent artistic research beginning in 2016, this method emerged from the need to expand the expressive possibilities of quilling beyond flat decorative arrangements. By transforming traditional paper strips into structured visual layers, the technique allows compositions to simulate distance, movement, and spatial depth.

Rather than remaining limited to surface ornamentation, Perspective in Quilling enables paper to function as an architectural medium, creating visual environments that invite viewers into immersive compositions.

This technique represents a significant step in the evolution of contemporary paper art, introducing new structural and visual possibilities within the traditional language of quilling.

Section 2 - Concept and Method

Perspective in Quilling is based on the controlled organization of layered paper elements to create the illusion of depth and spatial distance within a flat surface.

The technique uses variation in paper width, positioning, layering, and orientation to simulate proximity and distance, allowing the viewer’s eye to perceive dimension within the composition. By strategically combining larger and smaller elements, the method establishes visual hierarchy and depth perception, similar to spatial construction principles found in architecture and visual design.

A key aspect of the technique is the intentional arrangement of layers to create movement and directional flow. This structured layering allows the composition to guide the viewer’s gaze through different visual planes, generating rhythm and continuity.

The development of Perspective in Quilling required experimentation with proportions, scale, and visual balance, resulting in a repeatable method that transforms flat compositions into dimensional visual structures.

Through this method, paper is no longer treated solely as decorative material but as a structural medium capable of building visual space.

Section 3 - Visual Examples

The following works demonstrate the practical application of the Perspective in Quilling technique, illustrating how layered structures create spatial depth and visual movement within paper compositions.

Collection — The Process of Conquest

The Process of Conquest is a conceptual series that represents the internal journey of growth, decision-making, resilience, and achievement. Each work symbolizes a stage in the pursuit of a personal goal, translated into flowing paths constructed through the technique of Perspective in Quilling.

Beyond directional depth, the paths are intentionally built with variations in height, creating physical rises and descents that reflect the emotional highs and lows experienced throughout a journey. These dimensional shifts transform the path into a visual metaphor for instability, reflection, struggle, and persistence.

Color plays a central role in reinforcing meaning, evolving from calm beginnings to internal conflict, determination, and ultimately fulfillment. Together, the four works form a continuous narrative about courage, resilience, and the pursuit of creative transformation.

Outlet

Outlet represents the gentle emergence of a new beginning. The white forms symbolize openness and possibility, while sage green introduces hope and balance. Subtle variations in height mark the first movement of the path, reflecting the early uncertainties that accompany the start of a new journey.

Choice

Choice represents the tension between reflection and action. Purple symbolizes familiarity and contemplation, while orange expresses courage and bold decision-making. The alternating elevations along the path visually express the emotional instability present when defining a direction.

Obstacle

Obstacle represents resistance and interruption along the journey. Deep red tones symbolize determination and struggle, while the brown void marks moments of doubt and blockage. Uneven elevations reinforce instability, reflecting the effort required to overcome challenges.

Achievement

Achievement represents fulfillment after persistence. Dark blue symbolizes knowledge and confidence, while green represents growth achieved along the path. The golden focal point marks the final conquest, symbolizing success, victory, and creative realization.

Technical Statement — The Process of Conquest

The Process of Conquest explores spatial movement through the structural principles of Perspective in Quilling. The series is constructed using controlled variations in height, depth, and directional flow, transforming linear paths into dimensional structures.

Unlike traditional flat quilling compositions, each path is built with intentional elevation changes that create physical rises and descents. These variations simulate movement across space, allowing the surface to behave as a dynamic landscape rather than a static form.

The alternating levels represent emotional fluctuations experienced throughout a personal journey — moments of stability, uncertainty, tension, and resolution. By combining perspective depth with vertical displacement, the works establish a visual rhythm that reinforces both motion and transformation.

The continuity of the path across all four works creates a sequential narrative, where direction, elevation, and color function together as structural elements. This approach expands the expressive possibilities of quilling by integrating architectural logic, spatial awareness, and symbolic movement into the composition.

Section 4 - Technical Contribution

Perspective in Quilling represents an original technical advancement within contemporary paper art.

Traditionally, quilling has been associated with ornamental and surface-based compositions. The introduction of structured layering and spatial organization within this technique expands its visual potential, allowing the creation of depth and dimensional illusion within flat compositions.

By formalizing methods of layering, proportion, and spatial distribution, this technique establishes a systematic approach to dimensional paper construction. The development of this methodology required continuous experimentation and refinement, resulting in a structured artistic process that can be applied consistently across different compositions.

The documentation of this technique in Andrea Tisovec’s book, formally records its conceptual and technical foundations.

As a result, Perspective in Quilling contributes to the evolution of quilling as a contemporary artistic practice, expanding its expressive capacity and introducing new possibilities for visual construction using paper.

Section 5 - Development and Documentation

The Perspective in Quilling technique was developed through independent artistic research conducted by Andrea Tisovec beginning in 2016.

Over time, the method evolved through experimentation with layered paper structures, visual balance, and proportional organization. The refinement of this technique resulted in a structured visual language capable of producing depth, movement, and spatial continuity.

The formal documentation of this method was completed through the publication of Andrea Tisovec’s book, which records both the theoretical principles and the practical applications of the technique.

This documentation establishes Perspective in Quilling as a defined artistic methodology within contemporary paper art.

Section 6 - Author Statement

Perspective in Quilling represents Andrea Tisovec’s original contribution to contemporary paper art, developed through independent research focused on expanding the structural and visual possibilities of quilling. Through this technique, traditional paper filigree is transformed into dimensional visual compositions that introduce depth, spatial organization, and movement.
